For grown-ups: what this story teaches

This story explains "Proof-of-Work" (PoW), the security mechanism underlying Bitcoin. In a decentralized network, bad actors could easily spam the ledger with fraudulent transactions if adding entries was free. PoW solves this by creating a fundamental asymmetry: it requires miners to expend significant computational processing power and electricity (solving the puzzle) to propose a new block, but allows other nodes to verify the solution almost instantly at virtually zero cost. Because attempting fraud requires massive energy expenditure but will be instantly rejected by the network (yielding no block reward), the economic incentives make cheating prohibitively expensive and honest mining profitable. This converts electricity into an incorruptible, trustless record.
